 transposing

For the first time in my life I'm going to try and transpose some music for A clarinet for my Bb. Before I waste a whole load of manuscript paper could somebody please confirm that I am right in understanding that I need to transpose everything down one semitone. Also the music is written in Bb major, does this mean that when transposed it will be in A major? Thanks for your help

Since no one has yet responded to this frequently-asked question, I'll try. Yes, playing music for an A clarinet on a Bb, requires each note to be flatted, one semi-tone lower. Yes, the key of Bb becomes A, with the change in signature [flats + sharps] of 6, 2b's to 4 #'s. Others, please help. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks Don

I think I'm more confused now though, doesn't A have 3 sharps not 4 or am I missing something very obvious (It's midnight here and past my bedtime!!}

Yes A has three sharps. Just an honest mistake I'm sure. Therefore the change is of 5 sharps. 2b's to 3#'s.

Sorry about the mistake, janeuk, I knew there was a change of 6 musical keys between Bb and A, and forgot about "passing thru" the key of C. Yes, A is 3#s, G# being the last one. Its late and OU is behind!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
