 clarion register plus new gonzalez=squeak?
Author: moose6589

Recently, I pulled out a new Gonzalez 3.25 strength reed and tried it out. It played amazingly well for a new reed, yet it squeaked very easily in the clarion register! It doesn't happen in the chalumeau or altissimo, so what could be the reason? There's almost always a small squeak before I start a clarion note, and I don't think it's my fault because the problem doesn't occur with other reeds. However, it's not the specific reed, either. Gonzalez reeds just seem to squeak easier for me. Any possible reasons for this?

Maybe you subconciously alter your embouchre in the clarion register in order to compensate for the bad reeds that you've previously been playing. And the Gonzalez reeds, in all their glorious perfection, are simply too much for your current embouchure habits to handle!

Sorry. I had to. I use gonzalez and haven't run into those problems at all. On the contrary, I tend to have a much easier time playing ALL my notes with a gonzalez reed out of the box instead of any other brand.

I don't know what could be the cause. But if the gonzalez reeds don't work for you, then perhaps you should stick to whatever other brand you were using.

Some possible causes of new squeaking:

dry reed
too much mouthpiece in the mouth
a burr on the mouthpiece top rail
reed is split
the reed is not perfectly sealed on the mouthpiece
reed is too thin at the center of the tip, or is stiffer on one side than the other

Hey Moose...

Maybe you're 1/4 size too soft for your setup? Have you tried the 3.5's? Contact me at the office before Tuesday night (I'm at FMEA Wed-Sun) and we'll discuss what's going on and I'll send you some stuff to try.

Thanks for the replies. After rethinking the situation and contacting Phil, I've decided that it's not a reed problem or an embouchure problem. It is, in fact, a mouthpiece problem! My mouthpiece is extremely resistant, according to my teacher, and if it were not this resistant, I would be using a 3.5 reed which, from my testing, does not squeak. So, no reed problems, I'll just deal with the reeds until my refaced Pomarico arrives. Thanks again!
