I just bought a new wood clarinet and I have been breaking it in for the past week and 5 days. Today I played it at a rehearsal for about 2.5 hours (on and off), and it was great. I cleaned it, warmed it up, all that stuff. Anyways, my question is tomorrow I have another rehearsal, I am playing for 2 hours, straight, have an hour break, and then I play again for 4 hours, on and off. (I'm playing in the orchestra pit so the on and off parts are because of fixing up lines and choreography). I was wondering if you think this is to much for my clarinet? I know someone is going to say, I think you know the answer and you really shouldn't but I just want to know for curiousitys sake; what the chances of a crack are and what not. If I don't play my new clarinet, then I have to play my spear plastic, that is missing some corks, has bad pads, and is out of tune (what a shock? lol). Yes, I do plan on getting it fixed, so the next time I need it I wont be dreading having to play it.

Don't do it. Better safe than sorry. And it's not a performance. So why bother taking the risk? I know it's a "bummer" to play your old one (I'm going to have to go through the same ordeal when I get my new horn in a few weeks) but I'd much rather take the extra time to break it in than risk damaging it.
Think "long-term" here. Then you'll know what's the right thing to do.

Melissa,
This is your judgement call, but if I were in that situation, I would play the new clarinet.
If it cracks, it is because of flaws in the wood structure. A new clarinet should have some kind of crack warranty.

A related question -- When breaking in a clarinet, what exactly is being broken in? Can someone give me a physical justification for whatever the breakin procedure is?
