I really know nothing about big band but for my schools concert band we play Big band favorites arranged by Bob Lowden and it has some good clarinet parts. It has the songs I'm getting sentimental over you, here's that rainy day, stompin' at the avoy, in the mood, and woodchopper's ball.

I don't know any great list of songs, but you can look at any benny goodman song or artie shaw song. They're pretty much guarenteed to have clarinet solos in them. Just for starters. Eveyone else knows more than me though so you'll get more recomendations.

I like clarinet too much to rely on the few big band charts which have written clarinet parts...as lead tenor player, I get plenty of solo space, so I simply take some of them on clarinet. The guys in the band I play in don't seem to mind ( or they're too polite to tell me not to!)

In a recently-archived thread, "O'Brien Crystal MP with 2-S Facing", JimV has comments re: his and Pete Fountain's Dixieland playing in bands where big-bore [15.0 mm ] cls were used for volume-projection. This is apparently quite a problem in modern "big-band" cl solo playing, where playing over loud accompanyment even with amplification in not very satisfactory. I recall trying to make my Woodchumpers Ball solos heard back in them there daze. TKS for that list, GBK. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

You're quite correct regarding volume...the band needs to be sympathetic .....since not all are, I also use a different set up for big band situations

I've been on a quest for over a year looking for the same arrangements and they a few and far between.

A couple of sources I've found are:

http://www.marinamusic.com/ Begin the Beguine & a few Goodman arrg.

http://www.otterdist.com/pm-category-search.cfm Several arrg. w/clarinet

Also, there are lots of concert band arrangements of big band classics that feature clarinet sections. Dixieland is also a clarinet rich environment.

Best

GBK - how's Big Band East going, by the way?

diz... I've been pretty busy with Big Band East, but playing far more alto sax than clarinet.

I use clarinet on the standards I mentioned in my first post on this thread (Smoke Rings, Begin the Beguine, etc...) and on some of the Sinatra/ Nelson Riddle type arrangements we have, but for the most part it is 95% alto sax playing.

A lesson to all you kids out there...GBK
