 Mendelssohn Concert Piece No. 2
Author: Jen L.

Hi,

Yesterday when I got out the first clarinet part to the Mendelssohn Concert Piece No. 2 (for what I thought was the first time), I was surprised to discover that the Andante (6/8) section was completely familiar to me--I know I've played that before.

I've never played that much Mendelssohn before, so I was really surprised to discover that I knew that section fairly well. Can anyone tell me if that theme is used anywhere else by him or someone else? Or is it just the type of theme that tends to show up in excerpt books a fair bit?

Thanks,
Jen L.

It is included, in a clarinet-and-piano arrangement, in volume 2 of Clarinet Solos, edited by Thea King, published by Chester. Maybe you've seen it there. It's a simple but attractive piece, an excellent choice for a child to play to visiting relatives. (Hope that doesn't sound sarcastic, it isn't meant that way.)

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Was your mother a clarinet player? Maybe that was a recital piece she was working on before you were born. Ok, maybe not, but that does happen a lot. There's a famous conductor who had that happen to him only to find out that his mother, who played the cello, had prepared a certain piece before he was born and later he found it to be curiously familiar to him. It happens all the time.

The same thing that you describe happened to me when I opened up a Brahm's clarinet concerto. A friend had heard it in university and encouraged me to buy the piece. It was one that I'd done years ago in high school and then forgot about.

Brahms wrote a clarinet concerto?
