A Real Treat for New Years

Choices, choices....shall I watch Dick Clark's umpteenth New Years Rocking Eve, or avail myself of a rare opporunity to watch a pro clarinetist perform??

Sorry Dick. That was a no-brainer.

Now I certainly hope that this doesn't embarrass someone "close" to the this board, BUT.............

I had the privilege of hearing none other than GBK perform (via a tape)
both as an orchestral player and soloist. Let me tell ya.....it's the real deal:
A very tasteful Rhap. in Blue...just the right combination of improvizational exhuberance on top of solid classical foundation....and then the ever popular Weber concertino, done just like he described it in his postings about its performance, with one helluva quick tempo in VarII and the finale. Crisp clear sound and nice use of dynamics. Impressive. ...but what does a guy do with the flower presentation?

If he's smart (and I know he is), he will take those flowers home and do a forwarding presentation with the words, "Dear, without your inspiration, I never could have had these thrust upon me. Here, you deserve them more than I. They're yours." That oughta do it.

Regards,
John

Probably deserved the flowers more than the pianist. (just speculation) Wonder if the conductor gave him "the nod" (stand up) at the end of R in Blue.

What's a guy do with flowers? In our orchestra the male soloists generally receive food in their dressing room, usually a home-made pie. They seem to like that better. GBK, you should have played with us!

I'm so jealous. I spent my new years attempting to watch the New York Philharmonic perform from the Lincoln Center on PBS while everyone around kept asking, "What the hell are you watching?! Can we change this please!?" I only made it through the first Aria and didn't even get to the orchestral playing.[frown]
