The composers here are certainly coming out of the woodwork this week
This question is the same one as my "Why do you play?" thread.
Why did you start composing? Why do you continue?
I started, when I was about 10 1/2 yrs old, because I'd been playing the clarinet for a little over a year, and had joined my school band a few months ago. I'd been listening to the music we were playing, and constantly thinking of things I would have done differently. I was also rather annoyed because the trumpets got all the good parts, and the music was too easy, and we played it at the most ridiculously slow tempos... so, one day, I sat down and composed a piece of music for the clarinet and played it in show-and-tell the next day.
I continue because it is fun, and because I have a tedency to internalise things that are really bothering me, and composing provides an outlet that keeps me from going completely insane. (That is also the same reason why I paint)

A number of years ago, I was at a talk given by composer Steve Reich. At a point when he was taking questions, a young composition student asked philosophically "Why do you compose?" to which Reich replied 'It keeps me off the streets!"
