I just bought a new Yamaha Custom clarinet and it's my first time owning a wood instrument. I was wondering about what I need to do to look after it especially since it's brand new. Someone said something about putting bore oil on it right away and even a few times before playing it. Is this true? and how do I go about putting it on? I also bought some things called pad savers where you put them into the instrument after you play it to suck out the moisture. Are these really necessary? Am I supposed to put bore oil on them and put them into the instrument? (someone told me to do that to but it sounds extremely odd to me). Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

Don't play it too much too quick. Five minutes a day for the first week, then add five minutes a day each day after that. Always let the instrument warm up in your hands before taking it out of the case and playing into it with your warm breath right away. As to the oiling, you'll get different responses, all whom know better than I would. As to the pad savers, I know plenty of people who don't use these and still are successful in having a healthy instrument.
Basically in the first two years you're being careful that the wood doesn't crack. That's what you need to worry about.

I am a firm believer in oiling Clarinets (with proper oil), but only if it is needed. For a new instrument, rather fresh out of the factory (not one that's been on a store shelf for five years), the likelihodd that it needs oil is very low.
Pad Savers? Don't know. Never used 'em.

I've been strongly warned away from pad savers. They really don't save the pads from experience... They trap the moisture and ruin them in one tenth of the time.

Ask the shop you bought it from and do exactly what they say. Then if something goes wrong it's more difficult for them to blame you.
The advice I was given when I bought my new Concerto a couple of weeks ago was to play it as much as I want but swab it every few minutes, and oil it with their recommended oil three times a week initially.
I am following this advice.
No doubt your shop will tell you something completely different. Just do what they say.
