I picked up the bass the other day and absolutely love it! The only... few, problems are that 1) My tone seems very shaky. why is this and what can I do to make it stop? 2) B5 and C5 need an enormous amount of air to produce. Is that normal? I tried two basses and they both seemed the same. 3) My tuning is horrible! If I tried out for any auditions right now I'm sure I would have things thrown at me. Is the bass typically flat? Is there anything I should really do to try and keep in tune?

As soon as possible have the instrument looked over by a repairman. Bass clarinets can go out of adjustment easily and when they do they can be difficult to impossible to play. Make sure that there are no problems with the instrument.

Make sure there are no problems with your mouthpiece. Just like the Bb soprano clarinet, a major factor in the equation.

Retired, playing more sax than clarinet, but still playing clarinet and still loving it!

B4 and C5 (written in the middle of the staff) are delicate notes, a good combination of mp and reed produces changes in this zone, look for a combination that works well for you, and a lot of practice.
