 Mouthpiece for old clarinet
Author: thinman

I am learning to play an old Boosey & Hawkes Edgware clarinet, and wanted to find a mouthpiece well suited for a beginner. It is vintage 1955, and is a large bore, 0.59". I was told by Clark Fobes that I would not likely find an American or French mouthpiece to work with my clarinet due to the bore. Any suggestions? I currently have an old Noblet 2V mouthpiece.
Thanks-

Thanks for the responses, but I need to explain my problem better. I would love to get a Fobes mouthpiece, but he explained that it would not sound right with a large bore clarinet. I am hoping to find a reasonably priced mouthpiece for a large bore that would be good for a beginner.
Hope that explains my situation better.
Thanks-

Peter Eaton large bore mouthpiece. That'll probably run you some money, but it should match up well and should be a good mouthpiece (meaning no upgrading needed in the future)

Clark really does know his business.

Why not buy directly from him?

The mouthpiece is vital to getting a good sound from any instrument.

I'm not entirely sure I would sink much money into an Edgeware, but if you like the feel of these, any suitable mouthpiece would transfer well to a 1010 or other large bore instrument.

I would recommend the Selmer Centered Tone if you like the way your Edgeware sounds; they're built well, and reasonably inexpensive.

Yeh, if Clark already provided some free advice why not help him out?

Pomarico is now making a crystal MPC with a tip opening of 1.48mm...that would certainly work well with your big bore Edgeware.

Thanks for the reply, but the problem is that Clark told me his mouthpiece would not sound right with a large bore clarinet. I am hoping to find a reasonabley priced mouthpiece, good for a beginner, that will sound right on a large bore. Any suggestions?
Thanks-

I started out on an Edgeware a very long time ago and then graduated to the Boosey & Hawkes 1010. When I resumed clarinet playing a couple of years ago, I went through an exercise similar to the one you are engaged in. Peter Eaton's mouthpieces have been mentioned, and I know a local professional who uses one on his 1010 and thinks it is great. The problem is that the price (about US$350) exceeds the value of your Edgeware and, unless you know you are going to stay with large bore clarinets, it's an outlay I wouldn't recommend at this stage. The other mouthpiece maker who has models suited to the English large bore clarinet is Ed Pillinger at <http://www. pillingermouthpieces.co.uk>. Ed is very knowledgeable and very nice to deal with. The last, and cheapest, option I know of is the Vandoren "13" series mouthpieces. You can get details at http://www.vandoren.com While mouthpiece makers will say they shouldn't work with a large bore clarinet, my current teacher suggested I try an M13 and I found it easy to blow with better intonation than the mouthpiece that came with my 1010. (Don't spend too much. I switched to an R13 a few months ago and was amazed at how much easier it is to play and how much more available mouthpieces and suitable accessories are.)

My outspoken opinions:
1) Bore matching is unimportant -- try lots of mouthpieces irrespective of 'bore diameter' and find one that works --- and you WILL find one.
2) If you feel you absolutely must match the bore sizes (to permit you to sleep soundly at night), then buy a Clark Fobes or other excellent mouthpiece (e.g. Greg Smith, David Hite, etc.) and have a machinist enlarge the bore section slightly to match your barrel. It won't make much difference in how it plays, but you'll have spent more money, thus you'll feel like you've accomplished something significant.
