Can anyone recommend and good audition pieces. This audition is for a highschool band. I'm a junior and I really want to make second chair. Everybody in my section is playing the Mozart clarinet concerto K.622 and so I'm lookking for a piece at about that level. Thanks.

Weber's Concertino is nice. However you really should have chosen a piece a couple of months ago to work on if it the auditions are for this year's concert band seating.

Carl Stamitz wrote some really nice clarinet concertos, especially #3. Some of them are about the level of the Mozart.

maybe try the weber concerto 1 or maybe a movement of the third concerto - a little bit harder

yeah, i agree with the others that replied back. weber's concertino is cool, and so is the concerto no.1. the piece depends on the time you have to prepare. right now i am doing rabaud's solo de concours, which i find slightly easier, but it sounds impressive, and that's always good. but does your band director base everything on hardness? you could sound better than them on an easier piece....but above all, pick something that flatters your best qualities. that's the way i would go. and shoot for the first seat- not second!!! good luck!

I agree whith the others that Weber is a very good choice for auditions, but it can also be a good choice to play something which is originally written for clarinet and piano, like the Poulenc sontata. It sounds brilliant, but it`s actually not that hard. Good luck, and I agree whith Leah: go for the first chair!

I agree with Leah. You want to find something that YOU can play well and that shows off all YOUR best qualities, don't just go for a piece that is the standard everyone else plays at-you won't have time to prepair properly at it won't make you look good. However, if you are really intent on something of this standard try the 'Fugetta' from Finzi's 5 bagatelles. It's the same standard as the Mozart, but doesn't have so many awkward bars rest (you know the feeling where you're standing there just counting for 16 bars). If you get the Boosey and Hawkes edition there is one handy bar of rest at the page turn.

How about Premiere Rhapsody, by Debussy? I've heard good things about that. I have to order it, i want to look at it. Has anyone ever played that?
Or else, Solo de Concours, by Messager. My friend played that and i really really liked listening.
