 Buffet mouthpiece (?)
Author: markBbclar

A few months ago I bought Buffet E13. Excellent horn and the best thing is it's mouthpiece that came with it which I love. Also a friend of mine tried it and it works for him too. The problem is that we don't know what model it is. There is nothing on it. He would like to get one like this but we don't know what to look for. Any ideas?

Mark

It is probably a Buffet Crown mouthpiece. If you really want another one, just go back to the store where you bought your E13 and they'll probably give you one or sell you one for cheap. Most people don't use them. Before your friend spends money on it, though, suggest he try some of the excellent and inexpensive student mouthpieces by Clark Fobes and others. I question if it will be free or cheap.

Take up a collection. I'm sure a large percentage of the people who have bought new Buffets on the board are probably using their Crowns to prop their cases open.

If you're looking for a mouthpiece like the crown, just send me any blank or mouthpiece you can get your hands on. I'll personally reface it for you to the crown's standards.

Alexi

BTW, anyone reading this have any quick tips on how to properly reface? Do I need any tools or can I just use sandpaper and a sharp knife?

Alexi,

Just scrape it along the edge of your music stand until you get the facing where you want it. I find the Manhasset to be more effective than the Hamilton.

Now now, guys! You're all too harsh....a few years ago someone sent me the legendary plastic Buffet "crown" mouthpiece to reface, and I was able to get it to play pretty well ---- after severely modifying the facing, the tip shape, the baffle, the chamber, the window, the bore --- gee, I guess that covers about everything, doesn't it?

BobA....haha, really got a laff outa that one. Personally, I dont think you are sarcastic, just a victim of living in a cold climate where one's teeth chatter all the time.

Bob A: msloss wasn't being sarcastic; that was serious. And I think BobD has deciphered your secret.

Cheap? You bet. I bought three a year or so ago for around twenty bux. Thought it might look good when selling an instrument on eBay: "Brand-new Buffet mouthpiece included!"

Some people like them? Nothing wrong with that. Also, with cheap plastic stuff, there can be considerable variation among units. This might do a lot when a fraction of a millimeter can mean the difference between great and lousy. You, Mark, may be fortunate enough to have got your hands on an accidental really good one (maybe the one they are all supposed to be but aren't). Don't expect always to be so lucky. And do use a pad on the mouthpiece to prolong its useful life. Upper teeth really dig into that plastic after a while.

Regards,
John

Perhaps Mark's mouthpiece was the "diamond in the rough" of buffet mouthpieces.

BobD, M'God! I think you have discovered the secret to my overwhelming vibrato.
