 is this fixable?

Hello, everyone.

I'm searching for an A clarinet right now. My teacher picked out a Yamaha SEV at a local music store. I've tried it and there's one thing that I don't like about it: on a few of the higher notes (top line F to A above the staff) sound a little weird. I'm not sure how to describe it...maybe buzzy and bright?

Do you think this can be fixed? Or should i learn to live with it? It's only $2500 canadian, so it's a pretty good deal.

Try another one ... Buffet make excellent A clarinets as do Selmer, Leblanc et cetera.

Check our Sponsors. Graham handles Amati's and reports on their "A" has been that it is good value.

If the words "I don't like" come into your description of a C$2500 instrument, go try another one. There are a lot of excellent instruments (all makes) out there. Absolutely no reason to compromise or get a fixer-upper for that much money.

Should be fixable with a bit of voicing. Your embouchure may not be used to playing an A also so it will feel a bit hard to control regardless of the brand.

Mark,

Would embouchre really be that different since it's the same mouthpiece? The only difference I found when I played an A clarinet for the first time was the distance my fingers had to spread to cover the holes. And a very VERY stuffy Bb and A throat tone. But that was the clarinet, not my embouchre.
