 Reeds become black

Why do my reeds turn blackish after long hours of practices? The black stuff can be scraped off, but i'm wondering how it got there.

Does this build up over time? if so, try soaking in hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria that might be building up.

I am willing to bet that a cola drink of some kind is involved. If not some other sort of soft drink. You find that the reeds of habitual cola drinkers go a greenish black colour. This build up is also a problem in the main body section of saxophones so it probably does nothing for the inside of a clarinet either. The other possible cause is some sort of lip gunk!

A friend of mine had this problem. It turned out he frequently wiped off the wet reeds on his black pants, getting black fabric stuck on the reed each time.
After giving up this habit, his reeds looked much nicer.

I had that problem after I used some reeds, then stored them in a sealed plastic bag in a desk drawer. I believe the black stuff was mold. I scraped the heavy stuff off, then tried hydrogen peroxide, as CrazyCanuck recommends, and recovered some of the reeds.

The obvious solution is to let damp reeds dry in a sufficiently ventilated location. Most reed holders have ridges or holes to allow a path for the moisture to escape.

I have this problem too. But only after the reeds are fairly old. I haven't had this problem in a while . What I do is I wipe the reeds thoroughly between my index finger and thumb trying to squeegee as much spit as I can from them. Then I put them in the reed holder. And I haven't had this problem since I've been using this system.
