If you're not good at either, can you be said to be "doubling?"

Not good at anything. Can't transpose. Don't sight read well. Too old to get serious. RA prevents major finger extension on right hand for Alto cl and Bb cl (gave my C cl to my grandson for same reason.) My bass still works fine. Solution---double your fun.
Bought a Conn (stencil) C-Melody Sax. Now I don't have to transpose. Now I just have to learn to play it. Maybe can even learn to read music. Might do something other than just noodle. But will be having lots of fun. Life is too short not to enjoy what's left of it.

If you ever need to replace the original stinky case the sax came in (like because one day the latch will break and you won't be able to open the case without breaking the latch off), contact ProTech. They customized a Bb tenor case for me. For several years, I used a soft gig bag (for a tenor) after the original case broke. My repairman blamed the bag's lack of sufficient padding for causing separation of the bell from the body, resulting in an expensive soldering repair job.

What year / model is your Conn? A sales guy at a Sam Ash store checked the serial no on mine and determined it was a Conn Castle from '23. Do you have the alto or tenor style neck?

They sound quite nice once properly repadded, adjusted, etc, especially for old-time traditional type jazz, or playing Russian folk music, IMO.

Steve it's a Conn (Stencil) made for Beaumont American, Chicago--according to the engraving on the bell. Just had it re-padded, re-corked etc, and bought an vintage "steel-ebonite" mpc. The serial does not help year-date it as no one that I can find , can recognize or date the company. It has the usual "P" Conn stencil serial number prefix, and most all the other earmarks of all Conn's (except no rolled tone holes--seems only the "real" Conns got those). Haven't had a chance to try it as yet as my RA medication has caused mouth ulcers and I need to let those heal. Will keep you posted. So far all I've been able to do is sit, look at it, finger it some, and grin a lot [grin]

For those who just shake their heads at me (or biblically 'wag their beards') I really just want to be able to play with our Praise Team in Church and "Praise the Lord" in music. Rev,. Avery woiuld understand.
