A while ago there was a thread about suitable gifts for teachers. I was reading the Times Educational Supplement today and came across a website which you might find amusing:
<www.cheesygifts4teachers.fsnet.co.uk>
I have to say I thought that some of the home-made ones were actually quite cute and I didn't think that those should be made fun of - eg the toilet-roll person (considering that the child would probably have spent time and effort making it), but some of them - well it does make you wonder!

I don't recall any student ever having given me a gift that was "cheesy."

The best one I ever got was a $100 bottle of cognac. I would have settled for a $50 bottle.

Mark: Personally, I always liked Courvoisier VS better than their VSOP, anyway.

The best gifts I've gotten from students are gift certificates. There have been a couple of things I couldn't stand though, so they went away at a "white elephant" party last spring to people who would "appreciate" them.
The hand made gifts are nice, too, although I've had a couple fall apart. I really do appreciate the work put into them, being a fiber artist on the side and all...
