 Rub The Vamp
Author: Rev. Avery

What does that mean? Where is the vamp on the reed? Where is the back? Sorry I ask such basic questions.

This is from the Gonzalez site for breaking a reed:
First day...wet the reed well, play on it for 5 minutes, rub the back and the vamp. Rubbing the vamp helps seal the pores and slows moisture absorbtion. Put the reed on a hard surface and use your finger to rub briskly and firmly from the shoulder to the tip. Rub for 10 to 20 seconds. Any longer and your hand could burst into flames (just kidding). Set the reed to dry with the bark side down, and then put it away. Simple right?

Rev, you need a copy of a book that includes something about reeds. Dr. David Pino's book is inexpensive and has a lot of good stuff in it. Look at the thread "Giving Lessons" where it was recently discussed.

Thanks. I found this in the past posts:

Recommended routine: 1) Saliva soak your reed (never water) before playing for about the amount of time it would take you to assemble your clarinet; 2) Lay the reed on a flat surface and vigorusly rub the vamp forward and backward until it feels smoother; 3) Play with exuberance and character--hopefully, no unwanted surprises--until you have accomplished your practice goal (or the conductor stops waving his arms); 4) Remover the reed from your mpc, re-rub the vamp vigorusly for a bit and then store on a flat surface until needed again. Hope this helps--good luck!!! (God knows that clarinetists need all the "luck" we can get)

JMcAulay's advice is good.

Pino's book, or Keith Stein's book are both good places to start, as the basics are well described.

Here is a simple reed diagram:

Rev. --

Here is a site with an illustration showing the vamp:

Hope it's helpful.

If it said "saliva", it must have been William!

Yes--that was my posting. And I still follow that basic routine, except that I no longer re-rub the "vamp" (step #4) when putting the reed in the case to dry. I feel that it is important to let the moisture evaporate out of the cane as soon as possible after playing to help avoid detereoration that retained saliva/water/whatever may cause. It works for me!!
