Seeing the thread on cello chairs made me want to bring up something that I have wanted for a long time -- a bass clarinet chair. I don't think such a thing exists, but I have my thoughts on what it would be like. (Perhaps I should keep this invention to myself to protect patent rights, but here goes anyway.)
Basically, two possiblilities exist.
One is to move the back on a chair forward to about the center. When playing my instrument, I always sit on the front half of the chair and never have the luxury of using the chair back as other instrumentalists do. This allows me to tilt the instrument so the bell is under the chair. I do this even though my instrument has a sharply angled neck. (I considered simply making a chair that was half as deep as normal, but this might prove unstable.)
The other option I see is to cut a wide slot out of the front of the chair -- more than wide enough for the instrument to fit in. This would allow one such as I to sit back in the chair and still tilt the instrument back. The advantage to this option is that I would gain more support for my legs.
A feature that could be added to either design is an adjustable peg holder. It would be located under the chair and be on a mechanism that would allow it to be adjusted forward and back.
If one of you woodworkers wants to try this out, let me know and I may be your first customer.

I guess my description of cello chairs was confusing. They're not actually lower, but they are not as deep, like you suggest above. I do like your 2nd idea about the slot in the front!

Don- I worked for quite a few years as an "inventor-advocate" for a major oil co., and dispensed advice concerning recording inventive concepts, as I did for Dan Shusta re: a pad[ding] invention. 1. write-up a "patent idea" with description and what drawings you can make, sign and date it as inventor, ask a knowledgable person, musician perhaps, to sign and date it under "Read and Understood by", which is preferable to [just] "Witness" . 2. Since you have disclosed some concepts here, I'll copy it and sign/date it as "R and U by" me for protection of your "early thoughts" disclosure. You can enlarge upon these with newer P I's, and 3. you might start some development of these ideas, which enhances the legalities above. Being a happy B C'er, I'll see what I can find in the [US] patent art, searching USPTO Databases, music [Cl 84], chairs [somewhere?, can find], there must be ?some? prior art re: our "difficult" insts. We prob. should communicate via E-M's but more [generalities] in this thread will prob. be OK. Fun, Don

What would be nice is a flat piece of metal attached to one of the front chair legs, with a series of holes into which you could insert the floor peg. Cellists use these all the time.
Perhaps ther ecould be another thingy that would hook into the neckstrap ring, so there would be no effort involved in supporting the instrument with your hands.
On the other hand, probably a decent bass clarinet floor stand would do as well.

OK... well, when you invent that, you have to invent the (straight model) contrabass chair too. But you have to share the profits with me for bringing another chair design into your collection.
Using the roll-y tall chair we have in the bandroom stinks. It starts rolling while I'm playing and it also turns. Of course my feet don't reach the floor, so I keep rolling and spinning. hehe

Just get some of that chewing gum other students stuck to the bottom of the chair and transfer it to the wheels.
(I got a laugh imagining you rolling away from your instrument.)
