Jacqueline Du Pre - Elgar Cello Concerto
Author: LeOpus1190s
Date:   2003-12-08 23:58

I know this is a clarinet forum but I think sometimes we get to stuck on our instrument and miss the fact that we are musicians first.

The story of Jacqueline Du Pre is one of greatness, amazement, and in the end sadness. After seeing the movie Hilary and Jackie i went out and purchased the CD with her playing with the LSO. It is said to be the best rendition of the elgar cello concerto. Adagio in the begining is particularly special.

Get her CD. It is a worthy investment for ones musical listening pleasure and inspiration.

LeOpus ... none better than Du Pre, period. Such a waste of life.

Bought the soundtrack for my wife last year. Very stirring. Is that Gigliotti doing the clarinet solo?

I got this CD a while ago, and I'd agree - it's the ONLY recording to have!

It's excellent, but not the only one. This is a piece that is worth having more than one version of. I particularly like Tortelier/Boult (not with Sargent). Try to avoid Du Pre/Barenboim. The Du Pre/Barbirolli is much better.

BobD-

I think she is referring to the demise of Jacqueline Du Pre. At the peak of her carreer in 1973 she was diagnosed with Mulitiple Sclerosis. For the people who dont know. MS destroys the nerve endings in a person. Slowely over time jackie lost the ability to play the cello and at the young age of fourty two she died from the illness. She was a great loss to the music world.

Le....yes, I'm aware of the lady's bio and have the highest respect for her career. We all lead multiple lives.
