 WWBW in NYC?
Author: sfalexi

I heard rumors of an outlet in NYC or around there. But then again I seem to remember hearing something about it closing down. Does anyone know if it's still there?

Definitely closed. Tomoji, who was the repair guy there, has apparently set up shop on his own, but the storefront where the NYC WWBW outlet used to be already has a new occupant.

Darn. Looks like if I really wanna try a big selection I'm gonna need a few days' trip to South Bend. Plugged into mapquest.com, it'll only take me 10.5 hours to drive! Now all I need is a few days off and someone wacky enough to go with me.

Thanks for letting me know it was closed.

Alexi,

If you are closer to NYC, check with Weiner also. His selection is equivalent, and he is tied up with good people who go through the horns (Bil Jackson).

(ChrisC) >> the storefront where the NYC WWBW outlet used to be already has a new occupant. <<

And therein lies the tale...When all is said and done, New York is a real estate town. The landlord holds the trump card on a lot of businesses. You can be doing pretty well, but if he ups the rent too far, you have no choice but to shut down. Quite often this means leaving NY altogether, because a lower rent is a hard thing to find.

Hi,

What do you mean in your messageto check Weiner? Is that a store? I am looking to try out several Buffets, and as you say WWBW is closed.

Thanks

Jerry

Thanks GBK. Tonight my instructor told me about Weiner's store. Said he bought his clarinets (and helped students pick out their's) from there and that the guy has a HUGE selection. Said the downfall is he doesn't think he has a payment plan like wwbw, but he likes his service better.

I'll definitely make a short trip up there when I'm good and ready and have a day of testing and hopefully drive home with a winner.

sfalexi...If you decide to visit Weiner's to audition clarinets, call ahead so Mark Kasten can have a number of them set up for you to try when you arrive...GBK

Thanks GBK. Is it necessary to tell him brand names that I want to be pulled or just let him know that I'd like a great sounding one? Cause I'm not a brand-person, and in my eyes/ears I'll use whatever sounds nice.

sfalexi...You can try as many clarinets as you want, all day long, but as you know many need adjustments right out of the box.

It would probably be a good idea to tell him the clarinet(s) you are most interested in. That way they would be ready, in optimum playing condition when you arrive...GBK

Thanks. I would be sure to take that into account. I know the chances of them having crystal clear throat tones, perfect twelfths, perfect tuning, correctly elevated rings, and correct spring tension out of the box is not "great". lol.

I sorta figured I'd have to take each clarinet and figure whether the problems with it could be fixed by a tech or not. I'll be sure to keep this thread in my "favorites" for when I'm set and ready in the next few months to take the trip.

Thanks for all help everyone. And GBK, thanks again for more help/advice.
