NOt ALOT to talk about these day except I FOUND a pretty incredible set of recordings of the cycle of Nielsen symphonies with a Danish orchestra and Paavlo Berglund...quite nice and recorded superbly. The Fifth has a great snare drum clarinet duet that is pretty rockin'. These records are on RCA....oops..cd's...

There was also an excellent companion LP set of the Nielsen concertos and orchestral works, with a daszzling performance of the Clarinet Concerto by Kjell-Inge Stevensson. I'm reasonably sure it's been reissued on CD.
I joined GBK in talking to Stanley Drucker after his recent recital, and he told us of a performance of the Nielsen 5th where the conductor asked him to turn his back to the audience and look at the snare drummer during the big duet. I don't remember who he said the conductor was (perhaps GBK will know), but he said the conductor had some connection with Nielsen, so perhaps the request had some basis.

I love all the Nielsen symphonies, have at least two versions of each --- including one of the 5th with the NY Phil and the very same Stanley Drucker playing the &$&^$^@@! out of the clarinet solo ---- he is THE MAN. (Conductor was Bernstein for that one, by the way.)

Interesting, Ken, on the comment by Drucker. Osmo's here in Minnesota now, and getting lots of good reviews from musicians and audience alike. Since he's a clarinetist, I'm really extra curious about his direction of the 5th you mentioned.
BTW, Burt Hara'll be doing the Nielsen Concerto in March, and I can't wait to hear it! Especially since Osmo Vanska will be conducting! Should be really interesting. The last time Hara played it with the MN Orch was about 11 or 12 years ago. I was very impressed with his performance then, but don't remember who the conductor was. It'll be cool to have a clarinetist on the podium, I think.
I must add that my favorite recordings of the symphonies (and the concerto!) are the set that Ken mentioned. Wow! Wish I had access to them again. They were one of my favorites from the college library...

mY FAVORITE of the Clarinet Concerto recordings is John McCaw's on Unicorn records...unreal...
as to the Symphony No. 5 duet one of better versions is Jascha Horenstein and his super version with the New Philharmonia also on Unicorn records...
as to Berglund's set the Duet in the opening of no 5 really has a violent feel with very good sound from the clarinetist....pretty marvelous...

Vanska is a great conductor...a colleague of mine in the Scottish National Orchestra thinks he is on his way to the top of the Conductor heap!!

David ... my personal favourite Neilsen recordings are Sallonen with the Swedish Radio Symphony (at least I think it was Sallonen). I'm not a big fan of numbers one or two, but adore the rest of them - especially number 6 (what a way to end a symphony!).

actually I am a huge fan of No. 1 and have heard many poor performances...
one of the better is the RCA Navigator record by Previn and the London Symphony from the mid 60s.
It is coupled with Martinon and Chicago in No 4....which is quite well done too!
