Hi,
So, my level is on Tuesday. I'm prepared. My piece (Solo de Concours) is there, My Etudes are good- (11+12 in Rose ) Major Scales are perfect, Harmonic Minors are perfect, Melodic Minors are a bit iffy, but there. Sight reading is ok. I have till tuesday. What is the best way to prepare from now till then ? Just keep reading over everythign and playing through ? My only thing right now is apparently, i don't play out enough.. what is the best way to work on this ? How do i keep my nerves cool ?!

Laurie

Play your pieces through twice every single day. You'll make different mistakes each time. Play them at a slower pace than usual, then your regular pace. Keep your embouchure strong. To get used to someone listening to you, record yourself on cassette - or even better, use your video recorder. Even if you never see the video, you'll unnerve yourself enough so that you get used to something or someone looking at you while you play. Go for a run and keep the lungs working - but not the day of your test!! I made that mistake and ran out of stamina.

The week before, sleep well and eat healthy foods (yes, your veggies) to keep your strength up and your nerves level. Sometimes medication can really help to take the edge off, but that has to be with the participation of a physician. The day of, relax a little bit but not too much. Just review the toughest parts of the pieces at a slower pace, review your scales so that they're fresh in your mind, and don't eat anything that would make you burp! Maybe an energy bar and a small glass of water an hour before would be all.

During - you're going to play really well, but you'll have the occasional slip or wrong note. Expect it, anticipate that it's inevitable and will happen, and continue as if nothing went wrong at all. Recover well from it. Play games in your mind and tell yourself that this is really enjoyable. Then when it's over you can fall apart.

Laurie,
In addition to the preceding...... help keep your nerves cool by avoiding anything containing caffeine.
It may help also to take slow, deep breaths while counting backwards slowly from 50 if you start feeling tense.
If nervousness is a problem but you haven't tried medication for it before, IMO now may not be the best time to experiment with it, even under a doctor's supervision.
Good Luck!
Hans
