These two seem to be the same model of Bb clarinet, as Buffet doesn't actually specify what the difference is between them. All the details about each seem to be identical except that the R-13's usually come with gore-tex pads and the E-13's come with skin. In fact there even seem to be some E-13's that outplay R-13's. Therefore I'm led to believe that the E-13 is the same as the R-13 but with a lower price. Am I correct in guessing this?

Luke,
What I read on Buffet's site is that they described the E13 as a "student" model while the R13 is described as a "professional" model. Except for the fact that the R13 is said to have "carefully selected" grenadilla wood, while the E13's is merely "selected", and the E13 is not described as having the R13's polycylindrical bore, I didn't see much difference either. Perhaps Buffet should try a little harder to differentiate these products for shoppers.
Regards,
Hans

Hans,
May I suggest the following marketing approach to differentiate the models:
"The R13 has all the 'right stuff' --- it should only be used by top-ranked professional players! Its wood is microscopically inspected and extremely carefully selected by a team of 20 Ph.D clarinet professors!
"The E13, in contrast, is sloppily assembled from leftover scrap wood by untrained part-timers who flip burgers at Wimpy's in their main jobs. Nobody more advanced than a rank beginner should give the E13 a second glance."
Too radical, perhaps?

I happen to like my E13 thankyouverymuch.
A beginner yes, but not rank. I shower twice a day. <g>

I'd love to read the writeup on the B12.

hmmm interesting... I rather enjoy my sloppily put together piece of scrap wood. E&S E13 equivalent. I wouldn't want to play on anything else at the moment. I have compared mine to new R13's and I think some of them are sloppy pieces of crap compared to some of the older ones. I think some of their quality has declined or their specs are just different so yes Luke they can and in do outplay some "pro" R13's...just something to think about
