Meyer Kupferman, Composer, Dies.
Sad to hear of this.
You can read obit. at nytimes.com.
A wonderful man and a wonderful composer of quite a few works for clarinet.
"Moonflowers, Baby!" and "The Magician" are some of my favorites of his works. He was very helpful to me when preparing these works for performances.

Tom:
Your posting is sad news about our friend, Meyer Kupferman. He will be dearly missed. I met him many years ago with my woodwind quintet, which was playing a piece of his at a SOHO art gallery. He was very enthusiastic, complimentary, and helpful. I played and taught many students his clarinet pieces, which I still enjoy.
Just this past month we've lost:
Michael Kamen
Michael Small
and now,
Meyer Kupferman
These giants will be missed.
Tom, thanks again for sending me your fine CD. I've enjoyed listening to it. For those of you who haven't heard Tom's wonderful playing, check out:

I had the privilege of working w/ Mr. Kupferman in 2001 in Wichita, when I performed his piece "O, Kkkkanon Ppphodder!" with a large group of clarinet players from the Wichita area. I remember him being a very, very colorful man, and I enjoyed playing this piece. Very sad to hear of his passing.

John,
Thanks for your kind comments about the CD.
One of my favorite Kupferman pieces is "The Magician." This is more for sentimental reasons than musical, although musically the piece is worthy of performance.
In the months shortly before his death, Leon Russianoff decided to perform again in public. He was going to play Kupferman's "The Magician" and he gave me a copy of the music the same time he started work on it and told me we were going to work on it together - "two heads better than one."
So Leon and I worked on it with Mr. Kupferman and wrote detailed notes in the music about its technical difficulties and Leon's solutions. He was incredibly nervous about performing it, but did so with a most virtuosic flair.
