I will be going on a trip to France and I was wondering if anyone knew of any interesting music stores in Paris. I heard that there was a street where there are a lot of music stores but I haven't been able to locate it on the internet . Also I heard that I might be able to get a good deal on a clarinet if I purchased it in France. My teacher told me to take my mouthpiece along so I could try out some instruments. If anyone has any info on any thing clarinet related in Paris and environs let me know.

Ken,
I don't know if this might be useful? Vandoren has a music store in Paris. Their 156 page catalogue is at the site below.

I'm going next year too and plan to visit the Selmer factory.
Regards,
Hans

Three stores for woodwind and brasswind instrument are located in Rue de Rome, near Saint-Lazare subway station (also Rome subway station). They are:
musique et art, Vincent Genod
Le Ménétrier, http://www.le-menetrier.com
Feeling Musique, http://www.feelingmusique.com
Also The Woodwind and the Brasswind has a store in Paris, near the Paris conservatoire (Cite de la Musique), http://www.woodbrass.com
If you are not an european inhabitant, you can profite the tax reduction (16% in France).

Don't do it for the deal -- do it because there is a great selection of instruments to pick from. The exchange rate to the Euro is not great right now ($1.19 = 1E), so a lot of the price advantage goes away. Add to that the risk of getting nailed with import duties if you aren't convincing at customs, and there goes the rest.
That said,
QUINTETTE MUSIQUE 71 BOULEVARD BEAUMARCHAIS 75003 PARIS 0142782575
With enough advanced notice, they can get you in to the Buffet or Selmer factories to try instruments if you are in a buying mood (so could a US dealer if you wanted to go that route).
Bon chance.

I may just shop them on this trip because it may be a good opportunity to try out a lot of instruments. Do the Leblancs, Buffets and Selmers sold in France have the same model numbers and names as they do here? What is the deal with taxes and customs when you bring new or used horn back to the US? In any case I'm sure I'll enjoy visiting the shops. Ken

Just a personal observation. When I selected a clarinet recently for a young neighbor of mind, I found Feeling music on the rue de Rome to have the greatest choice of clarinets and the most helpful sales staff.

I have noticed in my travels through the European continet is that by far the least expensive reeds are sold in the US. Especially now with the depreciatied American dollar (not the strong Euro) there are very few bargains to be had buying merchandise in Europe.
Take care and good luck,
Ron Jr.

There are a number of music stores on the Rue de Rome (it's near the Gare St. Lazare) My memory is of a lot of violin makers, but I think there are also some general music stores there. Bon Voyage!

Judging from Vandoren's bilingual literature, mouthpiece would be "bec," which, I believe, translates literally as "beak."

Mouthpiece is "bec". In fact is "le bec" masculin gender.
reed: anche
barrel: barril
bell: pavillon
key: clé
pad: tampon
upper joint: corps du haut
lower joint: corps du bas
(a little english-french clarinet dictionary)
etc.

Thanks for the French clarinet terms. Regarding the visiting of clarinet makers in France: does one need to be a serious buyer to visit any of the factories?
