 Artie Shaw Revisited
Author: Carol Dutcher
Date:   2003-11-26 21:02

I don't believe this has been posted so far, but if it has, forgive me. At any rate, I read in the American Rag, (News you can use about traditional and ragtime) that Artie contributed two of his clarinets to the Smithsonian Institute in return for a lifetime achievement award. They will be on display during Jazz Appreciation Month in April at the Museum of American History.

What the article doesn't say is what kind of clarinets they were. Does anybody know? I'm curious.

I haven't read this article but it seems uncharacteristic of Shaw to willingly donate 2 of his clarinets to the Smithsonian in exchange for an award; maybe he's finally mellowing in his extreme old age...

Believe (from a previous posting) that both were SELMERS!! (What say you, Buffet Mafia!?)

"Artie contributed two of his clarinets to the Smithsonian Institute in return for a lifetime achievement award."

Quite curious really. Do you mean Artie did a deal with the Smithsonian?

Hypothetical dialogue: "Hey, Mr Shaw, give us a couple of your clarinets and we will give you a lifetime award" !!??

Is this how the system works, or am I completley mis-intepreting this part of your sentence?

One of the donated clarinets was used to record "Begin the Beguine". Here is the link:

Yes - one wonders! Does anyone recall what Coleman Hawkins' tenor fetched, by the way? I lost the thread before the hammer dropped.

Carol,
Shaw's authorized biography says that he played Selmers until near the end of his career, when he played a Buffet in his Gramercy 5 group; i.e., the donated clarinets were most likely Selmers.
I think it's inappropriate, that Shaw's award (apparently) was made contingent on giving up his clarinets. He deserved it, period.
Hans

Artie said in the article, or the article says that Artie said, They were a big part of my life for years, it's like parting with an old and valued friend. But I can't think of anything else that's better to do with them."

I assume the quote was in reference to his clarinets rather than his wives.
