There are a lot of options out there. How much are you willing to spend?

Silvite - check out http://www.finalemusic.com/. They have a link to a piece of free PC software for simple notation. It's called Notepad ... btw I don't use this software - so it's not an endorsement as I use a iBook with MOTU software.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

As diz recommended try out Notepad. If you like the interface and need more features, you can get the next step up, PrintMusic, for about $60. If you don't like the interface, there are a number of other programs out there you might try, though I don't know them from experience.

Look at Noteworthy Composer. It costs about $40 but you can try it for free.

Better by far than Noteworthy is Mozart: www.mozart.co.uk.

Try for free for a month, then buy: £62 or US$86.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

I'll 2nd David's endorsement of Mozart - I've never used Noteworthy so can't coment on their relative values but I find Mozart intuitive and easy to use (as long as you are happy with keyboard entry rather than relying on the mouse!)

Noteworthy is quite good; I also use Music Works which can be touchy at times but is usually reliable.

One of the Christmas cataloges here in Oz (thrown it out and can't find it) had a COMBINED keyboad (querty) and keyboard at a not too unreasonable price.

Any one know of such ?

Better still does anyone know of a programme capable of scanning a part (e.g. for A ) into one of these music programmes so that it can be transposed ?. I find that half tone down to be the hardest.

i've used finale and it's pretty good but my favorite is sibelius. it's a lot like finale but more comfortable imo.

Snowy

Sorry I think I confused I meant computer keyboard rather than the musical type. Mozart does input from a MIDI keyboard but I've had limited success probably due to my limited keyboard skills!

I've tried using packages in the past that involve a lot of dragging and dropping of symbols onto a score but as I have RSI problems due to mouse use anything that uses keyboard shortcuts is a bonus for me.

I believe the latest version allows the import of NIFF files but you need another package to actually do the scanning - again I can't comment as I haven't upgraded to this version.

Have a look at their website <www.mozart.co.uk> there is also a Yahoo groups mailing list that is quite active and even allows you to make suggestions to the guy who writes the package for features you'd like to see in future versions.

Noteworthy can be entirely entered from the computer keyboard. That is one of its strong points.

Snowy,
Some of these systems will use a scanner, recognise as music, then transpose and print.

My Music Publisher will , if given a good printed original.

See previous threads on recommendations for software.

re: Scanning. SmartScore (www.musitek.com) will scan sheet music and then allow you to edit it, transpose, 'midi-fy' it, etc. Finale will do this also using its SmartScore 'lite' which is included in Finale.

Microsoft's "Windows Media Player 9" (comes with XP) can adjust the speed of .mp3's but not audio cd's; perhaps earlier versions do the same.

"The Amazing Slow Downer" (www.ronimusic.com) - about $40 - can adjust the speed of both audio cds and mp3's; free trial version is available.
