Particular Playing Technique...

Author: avandiver  Date:   2003-11-24 04:06 Hi there. I am a clarinet player of about 12 years and am wanting to get into a little bit of Jazz. There is one thing that I have heard that I would at least like to know what it is called and how to make it happen. It's hard for me to describe but here goes: It sounds like the player is skipping two or three whole steps like a slur, but, with no break in the notes. Its smooth as if he just bends the pitch upward. I hear it in the into to Rhapsody in Blue. A teacher I had long ago in the Hot Cross Buns days seemed to refer to this and might have called it "Goosing???" I doubt that is the right term but does anyone here know what I am talking about and how to make it happen??? Many thanks Post Edited (2003-11-24 04:06)
