My community orchestra is going to be playing music from Spartacus by Khachaturian, and I have been listening to an old recording, conducted by the composer. The nice clarinet solo at the beginning of the Dance of Gaditanae, which I assume is for A clarinet because of the key, goes down to a low B (second line bass clef). This would require a basset extension and written D. Of course, it could be played on bass clarinet, but the sound on the recording certainly sounds like a soprano instrument. Does anyone know about this solo, and whether Khatchaturian wrote other parts for basset clarinet? Also, is there any way to get this note using some kind of homemade tube, etc., without ruining the rest of the solo?

I played the complete ballet with the Bolshoi Ballet in 1975 and I can tell you that there is definitely no basset clarinet or basset horn part. However, I'm pretty sure there is a bass clarinet part.

Kalmus does have a fantastic online search engine which lists their catalogue digitally. This is good because they always put a listing of "who's required" next to their publications. To my surprise, Spartacus and Khachaturian both turned up "nil". That was my first port of call in figuring this out, sorry - no help at all, really.
