 Mitchell Lurie

In 1971, when I was 11 years old, I tried out for an orchestra in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. For my age, I was quite accomplished on the clarinet and had played with various city orchestras. The person conducting the try-outs told me my embouchure, tonal quality, etc. etc. was horrible and I was not to be accepted. This was done with nothing but criticism, and for an 11 year old, it was quite devastating.

Anyway, at the time, Mitchell Lurie lived about a block from me, and my father took me to his house. Mr. Lurie, who was quite busy at the time, was nice enough to invite me in, gave me a listen, enjoyed my playing : ), and wrote a wonderful letter to the person that "burst my bubble" at the try-outs. I recently found this letter and wanted to give credit where credit is due -- even over 30 years later! Maybe Mr. Lurie will read this (I hope he is still around?).

Does anybody know where I can get a copy of the article in The Clarinet(?) that was written about him a few years ago?

Thank you,
Steve

Darrell M., a student of Mr. Lurie's, told me the other day that he had suffered some kind of attack. He has always been known for his generous treatment of clarinet students as well as his fine artistry. How about asking the ICA for a reprint? You may have lived on Pelham Avenue because that is where I went for lessons so long ago. Good luck!

Mitchell Lurie was on the cover of The Clarinet Volume 29 Number 1 December 2001. The article inside was entitled "Mitchell Lurie - The Ideal Clarinetist" and was written by Ron Samuels.

Information concerning the purchase of back issues can be found on the I.C.A. web site:
