100th Anniversary of Saint Mary's Band
Author: D Dow
Date:   2003-11-21 13:12

Just thought I would let you all know our local Band just had its 100 Anniversary concert. On Nov 20, 1903, our group held it's first official rehearsal. We are an amateur band made of performers of all kinds of levels.

In our group are symphonic players, students and doctors and lawyers who play for the sheer enjoyment of music making.

As to the next 100 years there are certainly alot of challenges. Saint Mary's Band is like any civilian concert band that has budgetary constraints.

Last night we played to a packed house and received the Leiutenant Govenor of the Province of NB. As well we have received an award and plaque from our city recognizing our contribution to the betterment of our city!

I have been in the ensemble since 1985 and function as Principal Clarinet and solist.

Among the selections in the concert were the Holst Suite in F, a Canadian Concert March, Spirit of Mir by Ben Bogisch a local composer. On top of this In the Mood was played by our Jazz group and our German Band ensemble did Satan Takes a Holiday. I performed Lightening Fingers in the second half as a Clarinet Soloist.

I know that St. Mary's has really done a great job and hope many of you have had the great fortune of being part of such great civic concert bands!

I would like to add Bands are where music careers begin

and say thank you Saint Mary's...

David Dow

Way cool ... too bad you couldn't have dug up the program (or research) from the band's very first performance and reenact/perform the exact concert as an historic gesture ... at the same hall (if it still exists) would've been even more special. v/r Ken

We have a St Mary's Band, an A grade brass band, in Sydney also. They probably have origins 100 years ago.
