Hi there:
I just got a tiny Eb off of Ebay, and was wondering if anyone knows about the manufacturer and can tell me something about them? The bell is enscribed: V Kolhert Sons Makers, Grazlitz, Made in Bohemia, Eb 239827
I don't really care about value, I used to play an Eb in High School and fell in love with the instrument and am so happy to have one again. Oh, and also, does anyone know of how I could find fingering charts or music for it?

A search here will bring up about 30 existing entries on Kohlert - not a lot is known, but that'd be your best start.
Fingering for Eb is essentially the same as for Bb - the music is transposed for the instrument.

Kohlert made good clarinets and other woodwinds for years in Eastern Germany/Czechoslovakia, and may now be known as Amati. I have an A cl made in Winnenden and have seen Graslitz/Kraslice on others {between the World Wars?}. Bohemia {capital city Munich} prob. dates your to before ?1915 possibly. The Kohlert bassoon making was taken over a number of years back by Bernd Moosman, who I believe was an instrument maker working for Kohlert. Kohlert, and Moosman, bassoons have a good reputation amongst players, especially the Winnenden made models. They also made some stencils for Boosey and Hawkes and in all probability others. They also made good quality clarinets beginning from around 1870, I have an Bb with serial number 29, mostly the various simple and German systems but some boehm's also. They also made other double reeds, there are quite a few oboes out there made by Kohlert. There is little similarity between Kohlert instruments and Amati based on my observations. If you look at <www.bassoon.org> and go to the makers pages, you will find a link to Bernd Moosman's web site and contact details. He may be able to shed some light on what happened to the rest of the Kohlert company.
The country of origin is not likely to appear on instruments made before the 1890's and the McInley (sic) Tariff Act.
Bohemia is roughly the modern Czech Republic, Capital Prague, incorporating Moravia and Bohemia, not including Slovakia. Important manufacturung cities are Brno and Graszlicz. Other makers from this area are Cerveny and Joseph Lidl and of course Amati.

The Amati-Kohlert link is basically that, when the Kohlert family fled Czechoslovakia in 1948 and moved to Germany, they had to abandon their factory in Kraslice (formerly Graslitz) and that factory was nationalized by the Czechoslovakian government and then absorbed into the government-owned Amati concern. That's my understanding, anyway. Mark is correct about the Kohlert instruments --- I have a couple of excellent Kohlert instruments from the mid-late '50s from their Winnenden, Germany phase -- a bass clarinet and a full-Boehm Bb clarinet, both of which have been serving me quite well. Also, many of the Kohlert saxophones from the 1950s-60s have an excellent reputation, as they had some connection apparently with Julius Keilwerth and the designs are similar.
