From memory, I think the bass clarinet part of Rach 2 (Symph) is
written for Bass in A and also in bass clef. Does anyone know of a
transcription of this part to Bb and in treble clef ?
I know, I know, I should be able to read transpose from bass clef
but life is too hectic to start just now.
I do possess a good scan/transpose/print software prog but this
needs a good original for the scanning process and my recollection
is that the Rach parts are faded and worn. I'm playing this in June.
If all else fails I'll transcribe by hand of course.
Thanks in advance,
BobT

BobT,
It is indeed written in bass clef for "A" bass clarinet (down on Rach! --- down on Ravel!) --- perhaps you could hand-transpose the few exposed passages and sight-transpose the rest as best you can (assuming all that noodling gets buried 'in the mix' as it usually does). Not the musically ideal compromise, but such is reality......

D Dow...no, no, he will have to play the part down a half step when he plays the A part on a Bb bass.

On the other hand, if he buys one of the six reputed low-A bass clarinets in existence in the USA and plays the Rach 2 on it, learning to transpose UP a half step will be useful so he can play all the normal Bb bass clarinet parts on his 'new' bass clarinet in "A".......(kidding, of course....Douglas is correct, D Dow made a rare mistake).

OK lads - got it sorted now and I didn't have to buy an A bass or transpose in the wrong direction !!!!! Thanks for the interesting suggestions.

Doesn't this debate rather prompt the thought ... if manufacturers made bass clarinets in A - would you buy them?
Would seem to be an ideal opportunity for a niche market, perhaps Amati (sp?) would consider it or Patricola (sponsor of this BB I think).
Just a thought.

Perhaps one could run a piece of rope down the Bb bass bore to change it to an A pitch instrument as some supposedly did with a string down a Bb bore changing it to an A many, many years ago. (Just a crazy thought, not really a suggestion, as I'm sure it would not work any better for a bass than it did for the soprano clarinet.)

Bob,
I have a transposed part for this piece that I would be glad to copy and send to you. Just email me with some info.

Amazingly enough I think the A Bass is made in Germany but only on order!
As to my mistake I obviously have been drinking too much German beer!
I doubt Selmer and Buffet would ever make one...I doubt they ever have made one. As to German parts, they play alot of the stuff for Bass in the Bass clef too!!!

I've seen a Selmer bass in A. I think there are a few in this country. Their website doesn't mention them, but I think they still make them to order.
It only goes down to Eb.

There is a Selmer bass clarinet in A that is owned by a clarinetist who currently plays in the Knoxville Symphony. I can't remember his name at the moment.
