 Vandoren B45 vs. 5RV

I've been playing on a b45 for a while now and I like it. Only problem is that for some reason when I play air escapes from my nose. I can feel a breeze coming down my upper lip. It makes my tire more quickly and exhausts my air supply needed for those longer passages. I love playing the clarinet, in fact, I just got my fiance to begin playing flute. It'll take her a while to learn, but I've got a pile of duet books ready to go, I am looking forward to playing with her.

Back to the mouthpiece issue.....I am trying to solve the nose air problem. I used to have a couple of extra mouthpieces, but I cannot find them now. So I am thinking of buying a 5RV to accompany my b45. Perhaps the 5RV will be more free blowing than the b45, thus reducing the air escaping problem. Also, if these mouthpieces produce different tones, I might be able to expand my abilities a bit with a wider range of tones.

On a side note, I am going to buy some 3 reeds, perhaps my 3.5's require too much blowing. I am really frustrated. Its hard to even enjoy my playing, when no matter what I do, air escapes from my nose. I can hear it coming up through my nasal passages. Very frustrating. I've been playing clarinet for about 8 years and have only had the problem for maybe three. I am unsure what has changed.

If anyone could comment on the mouthpiece issue or the nose issuse, I'd appreciate any input.

Bryan -

The B45 is quite open and free-blowing. The 5RV is medium to medium-close and will have more resistance, but will play easily with harder reeds than the B45. The 5RV Lyre is more open than the 5RV. I've found it to be one of the easier-to-play commercial mouthpieces, and you might want to try it also.

Best regards.

I agree with Ken above. The 3.5 reeds are probably too stiff for the B45.

The 5RV Lyre is the way to go, although the sinus issue may not be solved by changing the mouthpiece!
