 Wittgenstein the Clarinetist

The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein was also a clarinetist, and even composed a very short piece. Here's a good article: http://www.andante.com/article/article.cfm?id=22609 .

The article mentions a clarinet quartet by Joseph Labor. It's not listed in the Composer section here, and the ICA gives only a quintet http://www.lib.umd.edu/PAL/SCPA/L.html . Has anyone performed the quintet, or seen the quartet?

His formation of a singing group during the war reminds me of the Last episode of MASH when one of the surgeons formed a group of Korean musicians and had them play the Mozart clar. quintet theme on makeshift instruments...wonder if the screenwriters studied Wittgenstein.

The MASH writers certainly knew of Ludwig's older brother Paul, as there was one smarmy episode about a soldier who lost an arm and was despondent over the end of his career as a pianist. He smiled, of course, after Charles gave him a brief presentation on Paul (amazing that a budding concert pianist in the 1950s never heard of Paul Wittgenstein, then world-famous as a one-armed concert pianist).

That linked article is interesting! What a surprise that Ludwig played Clarinet, though his entire family loved music and other arts. Some of Ludwig's writings also seem connected to musical concepts, and my opinion is that his understanding of music was at least in part as a family of non-verbal languages.
