 Bore Size

How does bore size affect the sound? It's probably in the book I've ordered, but I figured I'd ask now :-)

Can't say for sure, Rev. but larger bores seem to be preferred for jazz

I've found that bore size mainly affects tone colour and projection. Typically, bigger bore sizes have brighter sounds and are less focused- two things that seem to be suited for jazz. However, bore design also has a lot to do with these tonal qualities (looking at the new Howarths as an example of this- bigger bore Howarths seem to give a darker tone)

I am not so sure that Bore is the only constituent that affects tone...as for examples.

Frederick Thurston played on a very large bore pre war Boosey clarinet and had a narrow small french sound with no vibrato.

On the other hand Reginald Kell played on a smaller bore horn and had an open large tone colour.

It is more about the way the player interacts with the horn and its bore that defines the sound. Generalizing that an open bore means an open sound depends on the player and the mouthpieces and reeds...

Thanks guys for the responses. As with everything, I guess it depends on the variables. :-)

I never said it was the only factor- I just said that tone was basically what it affected in MY own experience.

Rev - I suggest you use our BB "Search" features, as this [bore size] and perhaps other ?'s have been discussed at length by many of our quite-experts earlier. Their discussions will likely help you. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

To put Kell in context, the bore was 14.8/14.9 mm, as compared to the usual modern bore of 14.6. Thurston's 1930s onward work was indeed carried out on a 15.2 mm instrument, on which he made a slightly larger sound than earlier when he played on a 14.9 mm instrument.
