 What other instruments?
Author: jo.clarinet
Date:   2003-11-17 13:15

I imagine that everyone who uses the Clarinet BBoard plays the clarinet, but what other instruments do/did you all play?
I currently play recorders (all sizes from sopranino to contrabass) and piano - but I use the piano mainly for accompanying pupils rather than to play for myself. I used to play the flute as a teenager, and took up violin and viola when I was about 30, but decided after a few years that strings and I weren't really suited!
Clarinet is my newest instrument; I just wish now that I'd taken it up years ago. I'm practising hard to make up for lost time!

before studying clarinet, I played recorder. But I've never played again.
Now, I only play clarinet, no time to play other instruments (not enough time to play clarinet, unfortunately).

Have to admit it I'm another recorder player - but only as far down as bass. I also play alto and sop saxes and flute (the latter very badly and only when forced!)

In order of competence, (and not starting off particularly high at that...):
Clarinet, Tenor, alto, soprano saxes, recorders, but nothing in bass clef, electric guitar and bass

I've played sax: tenor and alto. Don't have either right now, idiot!!!!

I have soprano, alto and tenor recorders.

And, my favorite is the Ocarina. There's a fellow who has patented his own design of Ocarinas. They are beautiful and have a full sound and are fully chromatic. I love it (I play the one in the Key of C, but also have the G) because it has a sound similiar to the flute but it's about the size of a harmonica.

Here's the site if any one might be interested:

I played the mandoline for some months. I wanted to because I thought it had a dreamy romantic sound. Then I played it :-). I tried to tune it once and suddenly all the strings went 'poing' — they came unstrung (shows how tone deaf I am!). I never got it re-strung and it's still under my bed at my mom's house (sharing company with my busted clarinet :-( ).

Clarinet, alto sax, piano and a little flute though I don't have one at the moment so I'm not able to get better : (.

I am originally a tenor saxophonist and I played guitar as a youth. I studied piano for a while but had to stop for reasons completely unrelated to my desire to play the instrument--a most regrettable situation, since I feel absolutely hobbled by my inability to play the instrument today. I had been thinking of taking up the kaval, a Bulgarian folk flute, but recently thought better of it.

I don't play much besides clarinet and bass clarinet nowadays.

I can get by on alto sax. I started out as a drummer [yep - it's a musical instrument all you skeptics] and still do the odd jazz job [I'm reasonably good too - how's that for modesty!!] can vamp chords on piano and a little guitar, although I don't think I'd want to do either in public. Had visions of playing trumpet and owned a Holton [nice horn] I could play quite a few numbers but only in Bb [concert, that is] - I just couldn't make logical sense of having only three buttons to press down on and sold it later on.

In descending order of competence: clarinet, piano, accoustic guitar, tenor sax, flute, piccolo, and finally alto sax--which I haven't played since high school.

That's a long, sad list---jack of all, master of none, beside the clarinet, of course! :)

Clarinet, flute, piano, alto sax.

In high school I played the trombone and bass clarinet but don't have time for those now. Heck, I don't really have time for all 4 of the above but I keep trying.

Clarinet is still my favorite and what I'm best at.

I also play viola (professional level), piano (enough to murder vocal score accompaniments when I'm training my musical socieities chorus and principals), saxophone (I can get a noise but am NOT good) and, I often play the giddy-goat.

I am playing the following instrument, although you may not believe that I play so many instruments :

chromatic harmonica, flute, baroque flute , fife, clarinet, oboe, recorder (sopranino, soprano, alto and tenor)

In the past when I was in a Marching Wind band, I played the Tuba and Sousaphone.

Clarinet (including Soprano, Turkish G, and other Albert-systems)
Flute
Piano
Accordion
various folk fluty/whistly-thingies
Alto Sax but don't own one
Finnish Kantele (but mine's broken)

Obviously I don't play all of these well at all...Clarinet's the biggie of course (considering that I teach it and ended up with 2 degrees in it...)

Bb clarinet, A under sufferance
Bassoon
Alto and Tenor Saxes, soprano occassionally
Jazz Piano
I can also play the flute and piccolo but I find them about as inspiring as the A clarinet.

I definitely do not play alto clarinets or larger, baritone sax or the "giddy goat" whatever the hell that is.

Sax, guitar, lute, northumbrian & Irish bagpipes, whistles, ocarina, bodhran, bones, concertina, piano (badly) have been known to have a go on bassoon & violin.
Can't do brass or transverse flutes.

I did 7th grade Tuba, performed the Vaughan Williams Concerto in a comp/eisteddfod and won!
I also entered that same competition on Clarinet (I'd been playing it for about a year) and when my teacher told the judge I was more interested in Clarinet, he told me I'd never make it on clarinet and I should stick to Tuba.

Hate to say I told him so but... I'm SO much more satisfied as a clarinetist than I would be as a Tuba player now. I probably would have quit music a long time ago.

Get paid to play SATB saxophones, Eb/Bb/A/Bass clarinet, and flute. Get paid not to play piano. Recorder goes without saying. Have a special affinity for a little nose flute that looks like a cat.

Clarinets- Bb, A and Eb
Saxophone- Soprano, Alto and Tenor (they're just metal clarinets right?)
Bassoon
Oboe
and yes, recorder as well; but only because I have to teach it to education majors

the nose flute??? I guess you'd have to "pick" your repertoire carefully?
