I don't know if this has been discussed before, but is it really better to get a soft case instead of a hard case? I was talking with my friend and she was telling me about how soft cases protect your instrument better. Hmmm....

I think your friend has it all wrong--hard side cases protect better than soft simply because of the wood sides envolved. Because of that, for 99% of the time, I carry my clarinets in my LeBlanc hard double case with an Alteri cover (great shoulder strap). For airline trips and vacations involving limited space and a lot of carrying, I use a Yamaha soft-side double case. Not as much storage for extra stuff, but adequate for essentials and quite compac with good instrument protection as well (but definately not as sturdy as hard sides). Perfect for carry on, which I always recommend during air travel. Costs about $120 USA bucks.

By hard cases, do you mean the ones constructed from wood? I have a "hard case", well actually it's that plastic case that they come in. Between the plastic generic "hard" case and a soft case, is the plastic one better? The only problem with my plastic one is that sometimes the latches come undone and it doesn't have a shoulder strap so that bugs me a little bit.

If the latches come undone then ANYTHING might be better than that. Get anything that will keep the instrument off the floor and is in your price range!!!

Perhaps the only time a hard case(rigid plastic or wood) is necessary is when there is danger of abusive handling by others......which, maybe, should be never. There is a soft case on eBay for $23 and some cents that is a good deal.....I have 2(for the price of one ProTec). The Yamaha "soft" case is truly formidable and very well made. The hard plastic case the Amati comes in is also formidable....by the way(at least mine was).

I like my soft Pro-Tec double case. Among other benefits, it hurts much less than a hard case when it tips over on my foot.s
