I have been asked to play the third/E flat part in Mahler 2, and before saying yes or no would like an idea of how big the E flat aspect of it is. If you have performed this part, could you say whether it is mainly E flat, whether it goes screamingly high, whether it is very soloistic, whether it presents any other peculiar difficulties (e.g. it is really in D etc.). On the other hand does it involve a great deal of sitting around counting rests?
Any insights into this part would be gratefully received.

The Eb part in Mahler two is great fun to play. The Eb aspect of it is total. No other clarinets involved in that part.
As I remember it, (I haven't played it in a year) it goes up to G6 quite frequently and maybe higher at some occational spot. There is a solo in the Scherzo in a burlesque style and for the rest there are many exposed moments. It's not very difficult to play but you would need to have a very solid, warm, loud, soft and clean altissimo register. However, in the last movement there is a very exposed moment in unison with oboe that is tricky with intonation. You'll notice when you get there.
Buy a good recording and a pocket score and have fun.

Sorry I just remembered, there are of cause two Eb clarinets in Mahler 2. 2nd Eb is combined with Bb and A as well. I have never played that part so I can't tell so much about it.

For the most part, the 2nd Eb doubles the 1st Eb in the louder passages. There are a few measures where the two eefers play different notes and I believe there are 2 measures where the 2nd plays and the 1st doesn't. All in all it's not a great part but it is a Mahler symphony. You can learn a lot just listening to the orchestra and the other clarinet players when you don't have a part.

The 1st Eb is TOUGH! 2nd Eb is a little easier, plus you get the opportunity to play Bb and A. I played it earlier in the year.
You'll learn a lot, have a grreat time, and play some extremely good and challenging music. As if you'd say no?!
