And you thought only clarinetists were weird.

This is nothing new to those of us who also read the "saxontheweb" bulletin board --- the 'faddists' have been promoting cryogenic treatment of saxophone bodies for quite some time. And by the way, I can sell you some Marvel Mystery Oil for your keys that will make your fingers move 50% faster, great for playing those fast passages in Rossini.......I never cease to be amazed by the nonsense people will believe ---- especially musicians, whom I expect (rightly or wrongly) to be a bit more intelligent and have a bit more sense than the average Joe or Josephine.

To debunk these myths, all one has to do is consult a metallurgist, who would probably tell you, if I'm not mistaken, that cryogenically freezing a piece of brass has little, if any, effect on its structure. As I recall, if you heat a metal sufficiently (to its melting point?), the rate at which it is recooled will affect the crystallization process and the metal's properties. But, I doubt that any of this would have any effect on the acoustic properties of the instrument.

I also believe that it's possible that people in the arts/music have a higher IQ than average. But at the end of the day when the lights are out you're just that little insecure kid you've always been who's ready to believe just about anything to make life easier. If the devil whispers "By a Rovner and get the best sound in the world", it's hard to not listen. And if a demon offers you Marvels Mystery Oil for quicker fingers it's easy to fall for it again.
Sometimes I think that all the instrumental gadgets you can find in music stores are 90% superstition and 9% religion. The same for miraculous cures as the one in this thread.
But what the heck, people have to lean on to something to dare to go on stage to show their "beep" week after week.

This doesn't mean I'm gonna stop microwaving my Signet.e

Careful, Ralph, the microwave oven will arc and spark when those little microwaves bounce off the tenon rings on your Signet......maybe you should rub a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil on the clarinet first......

Well - it's a good thing that trumpet players don't have to deal with reeds.

But it was enough to make me go out and buy a Rovner. Hmm, wonder if freezing Rovners would do anything????

Wouldn't it just be easier to do a long half-time show as a member of the University of Alaska marching band. That should freeze everything.... trumpets, strumpets, clarinets, tushes.....

I don't know about frozen trumpets, but I once worked with a flute player in a military band who was forever conducting wacky experiments with his instruments in an effort to darken and soften his tone. One Friday at rehearsal he boasted he discovered a “rare silicone lubricant” he sprayed inside his head joint that produces a noticeably darker and more velvety tone.

Monday morning he showed up for rehearsal sounding exactly the same but with his lips ballooned up 3 times their normal size. v/r Ken
