 Extra Cash to Spend

In my other thread, called "protecting from cracks" I mentioned that I'll be getting an Amati ACL601II-0 (Yay!). Well, my parents had a budget for my clarinet set at 800 to 900 dollars. I found a deal for my clarinet for $720.94 so I have about $80 to spend on any other clarinet stuff I'd like. I need to buy a new mouthpiece and ligature for my current clarinet, which I'll have to set aside for marching season. Right now I'm using a Vandoren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece, and a Bonade lig., both suggested by my teacher. I think I'll just use those for my new clarinet because they're both really nice pieces of equipment. (Sort of) Anyways, I've calculated how much the new mp and lig will cost and it'll be about... $25 or $30 total. The soft case that I'm eyeing, the Gator bag they have at wwbw.com and probably other places too, costs $35. Should I spend the last twenty or so dollars on reeds? Help!

-MFG

P.S. What's a good kind of swab? I'm currently using a silk swab–is there anything that's "better"? Also-- darn I forgot what I was going to ask. If I remember I'll ask later.

MFG -

I haven't tried the Doctor's swab, which looks good, because I've been using a Gigliotti swab for years. The pull-ribbon on it extends about 10" past the end of the swab part, which lets me pull it out backward if it gets caught on the register vent. I think that's an essential feature.

Best regards.

And a relatively good price for a silk swab as well.

Don't know if yours will too, but my Amati came with a twisted wire "bore brush"-looking soft thing which is probably more suited to careful oiling of the bore rather than swabbing. A good swab is, of course, essential... and while there are some lovely ones on the market, making your own is neither difficult nor costly.

I suggest you try a few mouthpieces with the Amati before casting in concrete a decision to use what you have or what you think you want. The instrument might play better with one you perhaps have not considered.

Regards,
John

A good swab would be an essential accessory to have.

Other items to consider:

- small pocket tuner and/or metronome
- reed case with flat glass
- reed knife
- jeweler's screwdrivers
- music dictionary
- Baermann III ...GBK

I've got a GEM Silk Swab, a metrotune, a Vandoren 5RVlyre mouthpiece, bonade lig, and a la voz reedgard. I want a new reedcase because I do not like the reedguards. They're digging into my reeds! Maybe I'll get the vandoren reed case too...
