 New G.Smith mpc
Author: maureen

This week we got the new mpc/barrel combination from Mr Smith. This is just a note to any sceptical parents out there, who may be reluctant to part with the cash for a seemingly small item.My daughter has tried most of the popular vandoren mpcs and didn't seem too impressed, but being influenced by so many people on the phorum who are enthusiastic about the handfinished ones we decided to try the ones from chicago.
My daughter immedtiately took a shine to the 1* FACING ,and is playing the higher notes with more confidence and better intonation.Getting here has taken some time ,we tried mpcs an both Edinburgh and Glasgow and got some on approval from London. So be patient and try lots,it will be worthwhile,Maureen

I grew up only a few blocks away from Greg Smith but never knew about him until a close friend went to try out his mouthpieces. My friend ended spending 2 months rent on a mpc and on the time it took to play them and find one. I understand Pyne charges for the time as well. But by your post, it appears his mpcs are now availble through mail order. I've heard so much buzz I guess I gotta try one! Has anyone tried them for *free* in the midwest or anywhere above the Mason-dixon?

Stuart:

You are partially correct. When clarinetists come to audition mouthpieces at my home studio in Evanston, Ill. the fee for my time and personalized work is applied to the purchase of the mouthpiece. Generally speaking there are many to choose from. The next time anyone is coming to the Chicago area they can call a couple of weeks in advance and schedule an appointment.

I only sell my mouthpieces at my private studio or by mail order - I do not retail them in order to provide more personalized service and also to keep close control of their quality.

FYI--I just purchased a mp from Richard Hawkins who also uses Zinner blanks. He sent me three to try. I picked one, sent all three back with instructions to "tweek" the mp that I liked. He worked on it, sent it back, and offered to do further work on it until it was playing like I wanted it to. The only additional expense that he required was the cost of mailing via UPS--roughly $4.00 each way. Great mp, friendly and timely service and NO surcharge for further adjustments. Just thought you all would like to know.

This is the type of one to one professionalized service that I have been providing for several years now. I'm glad to know that other hand craftsmen are doing the same. But, since this kind of process is not possible to control through retail store situations, again I only send mail order or set up personal appointments at my studio(please reference my last post under this topic).
