Wow, I have a couple of those sitting on my desk right now! The thought never crossed my mind.

Which country are you in? I've never seen them here in England, but then I haven't actually searched for them yet. Where did you get yours (what kind of shop, I mean?)
I would've emailed you to ask, but don't know your email address - sorry!

I've used them in England, not on a clarinet, but for bundling cables during computer and network installations. The ones I used did not come in such colo(u)rs, but otherwise appeared the same. Most IT shops which sell to larger companies usually carry them for a few coppers a piece. I don't know if they will have the same acoustic qualities as the above, but I'll also give it a try the next time I have some.

Hi,
These look REALLY interseting and fun too !
Like Jo I've never seen Velcro like this in England - only seen it used in needlework circles - I thought that you actually needed two pieces - one with the hooks on and one which is furry and sticks to the hooks rather than Velcro being like cling film and stick to itself ??????
Am I missing something here ????
Perhaps the piece with the little hooks on would stick to itself ???

I'm off to search through my sewing basket !!!!!

Regards
Sue

Nice pics,John. I bought some of these "for a song" at Ace Hardware last year but have never used them for ligs. Will try.

Sue: One side of it is fuzzy, the other side has hooks, so it sticks to itself.

I picked up a pack of 5 from a Kinko's in the US about a year ago (An impulse buy: I overpaid, I'm sure).

Just make sure you buy the GOOD ones...

Best if your office supply store will allow you to try a few dozen, back in the office furniture section, before buying.

They should also be stored in the freezer, to align the hooks.

*******

The good ones were built years ago, of course, and modern knockoffs just don't have the same character.

I have one (or a hunert) available in the original mauve hook and loop for only $15 each...

********

Weren't the original ligatures string?

I had good results with O-rings once, but this is easier.

Kudos to the clan MacFrugal!

I read a clarinet book in the 1970s the recommended velcro ligatures. For a long time I used string, but somehow shoe laces kept getting lost. The velcro is easier. I like to use wider strips than are shown in the pix. I start with inch & a half wide stuff and trim about a quarter inch. I found that the two sided I tried was too bulky, so I use the single sided stuff. I overlap about 3/4" to form a shallow V. (I experiment with the angle until both sides can wrap around the somewhat conical mouthpiece evently.) After that, I sew the overlap.

Velcro is a little stretchy, so I generally wrap the mouthpiece without the reed, slide off, place on the reed, and then slide it back on. This makes it easy to get the Velcro tight enough.

I find that velcro doesn't hold reeds on the contra alto firmly enough, so I use a rover. but I much prefer velcro to a rovern for my Bb.

Yay! I've just ordered some through Maplin Electronics, and they should arrive in a few days. I'm really looking forward to trying them out. Soon it'll be decisions, decisions - over which colour to use!

Thanks, John (and Geo (George?) for cable-tie clue!) [hot]

My gut instinct says that they will gradually slide towards the tip and require periodic adjustment. Certainly a clever idea(like the O rings and shoelaces) but I have enough aggravation with reeds so will stick with the Rovner (aka Rover)

My new 'ligs' arrived today - I've only had time for a very quick experiment, but first impressions are very favourable. I was surprised how firmly they seem to hold the reed on - but they also allow you to make little adjustments for which normally you 'd need to fiddle about with screws.
For the price, I'd say you can't go wrong - if you decide you don't like them you can always use them for your computer cables!

To Bob D...

You just need to afix these properly...

a 6p nail should do.

I'm experimenting with Plastic reeds and Super Glue, mice-elf.

Well, I've just put my hammer and nails away; pity about the glue all over the mouthpiece!
Seriously though, I used a velcro strip this morning while doing my practice and it was very good indeed - held the reed really well. It showed no inclination to slip at all, and once you have it 'preformed' (as Jim suggested, I wrapped the mouthpiece first) it's very quick to get on and off.
I like having the different colours - the royal blue in my pack is my favourite - but there's also a black one for those more discreet moments!

Hate to say it....BUT ....told you so.

Joanne, I'm glad you got the velcro ties and are pleased with the performance. The colors are great. You can switch off to fit your mood.

Where do you buy them, and what is the actual name of the product.

They're ubiquitous and I've never seen a specific name. I think you'll find them in the electrical dept. of a home products store or your local Ace or True Value......

The ones I got (this is in England) were just called 'Cable Ties' from a company called Belkin. They aren't exactly like the ones in John's picture, but near enough. I got them from Maplin Electronics.
