I saw a reference to this opera of Messiaen and was staggered to see how many wind instruments are required (this must need a HUGE orchestral pit?)
Choir: s.s.m-s.a.t.t.bar.b.b (15 voices per part). Orch: 7.4.8.4 6.4.3.3 xylo, xylorimba, vibraphone, marimba, glock, 5 perc; 3 ondes martenot; 16.16.14.12.10
8 clarinets - the mind boggles. Does anyone know of an extant recording?
oh - btw the Opera's called Saint-François d'Assise (St Francis of Assisi).
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

It was performed last season by the San Francisco Opera, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong- I know it was on the West Coast.
Amazon has one recording, but it's out of stock.

I have seen some extracts perfomed sitzprobe on video along with Chronochromie, both the organ and orchestral versions. It was a documentary on the life of Messiaen and included a section on his recording and transcribing of bird sounds for Chronochromie. I saw it when I was at the Uni of New South Wales, it may be in the library there.

GBK's link shows a performance by Kent Nagano with the Hall orchestra.
This should be the Halle orch. from here in Manchester. I know several players who took part and believe I have the recording at home.

Amazing, because the lead trumpet there I know personally, his name is John McMurray and is from Saint John NB.
I would never have geussed Halle would have recordings of this piece!!!

Prompted me to listen to my CD of Illuminations of the Beyond again, last night ... I just love the passage in movement 8 where the contrabass clarinet plays fortissimo notes (in its lowest octave) in unison with pizzacato double basses. A totally inspired effect.
GBK - do you know exactly what type of clarinets he used in St Francis?
