Sorry if this is too much information but I have a gigantic canker sore by my lower front teeth and a rehearsal tomorrow. It hurts quite a bit to play (it rubs against the top of my lower teeth when I use a correct embouchre) but I can manage, more or less (by using a lazier embouchure). But will playing make it worse? I would like to recover in the shortest amount of time possible...it's been around since Tuesday and has been getting steadily worse.
I have some topical medicine but it doesn't do much. Any miracle cures?
Thanks,
Micaela

You might try gargling with 1/2 water and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide. That seems to work pretty well (although it doesn't taste too great). Also, perhaps some dental wax (the kind from the orthodontist), placed over your teeth, would help to relieve the pain a little. If nothing else, maybe a product like Anbesol or some other pain-killing thing would take some pain away.
There is also I product called CuraSore. I use it for Fever Blisters and it works great. I'm not sure if it's safe for the inside of your mouth though, so you should check that before using it if you wanted to try.

Before you start gargling with hydrogen peroxide, I suggest you do a web search to find out how much damage it will do (a) to the inside of your mouth (b) to the rest of you if you swallow any. You should also understand that hydrogen peroxide as bought in a shop is itself a dilution in water, which may be different from shop to shop, and the instruction to dilute it half-and-half makes sense only in terms of a specified starting point.
My advice, Micaela, would be to seek help from a qualified pharmacist. Meanwhile, if it hurts, don't play.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Hi,
I have a problem with the same sores at times and an MD/EENT friend, also a fine clarinet player, suggested that Zilactin-L would work and it does. This is an over-the counter in the US product that consists of alcohol and a small bit of Lidocaine, the active ingredient.
Place a few drops on the sore, get through the stingy part, and things are numbed up. Apply every 1 -2 hours. Your lip will be a little numb but I have had no problem playing. Evidently, the sores are immune system-related and may run in families; Zilactin-L will not eliminate the root cause, but you can get rid of the pain.
I'm sure there are such cold sore/fever blister medications in all countries.

I used to get mega canker sore inside my mouth, and usually, just when I had to do a lot of playing. There were no "over the counter" cures available, but I remember that rinsing my mouth frequently with salt water seemed to help. They certainly arn't any fun and will go away eventually. But, in the meantime (as you well know)--like in sports--sometimes we just have to play through the pain. Hope your mouth is feeling better soon.

You should see your doctor, but in my experience (FWIW), irritating it further by playing will probably make it worse, as will acidic foods like orange juice or tomatoes. My doctor gives me, via prescription, a topical analgesic/anti-inflammatory oral rinse called benzydamine HCL. It's also known as Tantum. Unfortunately it gives only temprorary relief.
Best wishes,
Hans

See your doctor for some prescription meds. Kenalog with orabase works well for some people.

Thanks a lot....I'll call the health center tomorrow (the woes of college life- my regular doctor's 4 hours away). Due to my current plethora of papers, I won't have much time to practice anyway. :( There's a little pharmacy in our little college town- walking down there would make an OK study break.
I think it's better today. But I definitely chose the wrong salad dressing at dinner.

Hydrogen peroxide makes great rocket fuel, and is useful in dying hair blond, but its "medicinal" value externally on open cuts is now debated. I personally won't use it just because of the pain factor. It has never been for internal use.
In my experience, a salt rinse is one of the first things dentists recomend for sores and recovering from dental surgery.
Hope you feel better!
