 Newbie Question: Rene Lorein?
Author: EricG

Greetings,
I was given two older clarinets. The first is a Buffet bass, Ser. No 529Y in very rough condition. Guess it's a 1907. The second is a nicely made alto, stamped Rene Lorein, made in Italy. It needs a little bit to get it going. Can anyone tell me some information about this one? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Eric

Sorry, Lorein isn't listed in "The New Langwill Index".

I also have a clarinet with the name Rene Lorein - did you ever find any more info about it? Thanks.

Kelly

No. Many clarinets are "stencils" - music stores would contract out to a middleman to get some number of clarinets branded "xyz" for the store. The middleman would contract out with any number of manufacturers to produce the clarinets, "stencilled" with the stores brand name.

I suspect Rene Lorein is one of these stencils.

Some of these stencils have turned out to be quite good, playable insts. Dave Spiegelthal has had quite a bit of experience with some of these and might be able to recognise the alto's maker, if you can provide more basic info, such as wood or plastic, are there two "register vents" and a "pinch" pad/tonehole Bb, any open holes, any other info on it, etc. Altos are not very popular, you should check with your band director to see if he/she wants one and can provide music for it. Bass cls are much more useful, but yours may not be recoverable, get a cl-playing repairer to give you an opinion/cost. I'll help also. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
