 Isang Yun's Clarinet Compositions...
Author: Wonkak Kim

Hi!

I recently discovered this name from wondering around the stock in our music library. I would like to learn more about his music but I was not able to get good result with my search engines. Anyone can tell me what his music is like? The clarinet pieces I saw seemed quite difficult with a lot of notes. I think it would mean a lot to me to work on couple music by a composer from my country. Please tell me all you know about his music. Thanks

I remember an article in 'The Clarinet' a few years back.

Searching their index at www.clarinet.org gave me:

XXIV/4 36-38 Kerstetter, K. Tod. Clarinet Music of Isang Yun, The

Maybe you can find it in your library - if I remember right that was around 1998.

(well, Someone-who-knows, that "audiences don´t dig it" - so the worse for those cloth-eared ninecompoops. Let them stay with the 18th and 19th century, and grow old and encrusted there.)

Isang Yun´s music is by far more than plain serialism, he was a very political composer, read his biography, it is frightening as well as astonishing what this wonderful man had to go through, especially in his homecountry. He is a perfect example of blending eastern conceptions of melody and timing with western form and notation. I have his "ryul" at home, for cl and piano, very very difficult, but extremely rewarding, - and I have also heard about this piece "piri", which originally has been for the corean oboe, and am still looking for it: E. Brunner (The KING) plays it on ECM´s New Series 1599 "Dal Niente" entiteled CD. There is something true about the argument that eastern composers have a special feel for windinstruments, Yun would be an excellent example.
I do hope You´ll find His compositions brilliant and deep, a joy for our instrument to play.
Markus

His music is published by Bote & Bock in Germany. The US distributor is Boosey & Hawkes. Go to Boosey.com and have a look.

Wonkak -

Isang Yun's clarinet music has been discussed several times. See:

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=84862&t=84799
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=74573&t=74441
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=53993&t=53987

The Klarinet archives has 17 hits. Search on Isang at:

As Markus says, Yun has made a considerble career after much persecution. However, I've listened to his two Clarinet Quintets and not been able to hear anything I liked or anything that sounded like the kind of music I understand or could get or give pleasure playing. Just my opinion.

In one of the links above, Dave Hattner, a young New York professional player, mentioned that he had performed Yun's music, but didn't get much out of it. If he's still following the board, perhaps he could say more.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
