 music history major??
Author: Tracy

Hi!
I am now majoring in Comprehensive Music Education at a University. I am really considering switching to Music History. The only thing that concerns me is that there doesn't seem to be a large job market for a person with a degree in music history. Does anyone know of any good jobs that require a degree in Music History or any people that have a degree in History and what they do? Thanks to anyone that can help me!

Well, I'm a music history minor (with a double Major in Philosophy and Cognitive Science), and fields you may want to look at include arts administration and music reviewer, especially for a classical music magazine. However, I think that most good music educators have a strong knowledge of music history as well: all the good music instructors I had had an extensive knowledge of music history.

Also, is there any way that you can major in both, or at least minor in Music History?

Really, though: do what you do for the sake of itself.

Unless you have to support a family right away.

thanks Meri! It is nice to know that there are other people that do this. I am interested in Arts Administration but they only way that I can find that program is in a masters program and I am only in my 2nd year of college. Are there any college's that you know of that offer it in undergradute studies? And Mark...no waydo I have to support a family now...give that a few years!!!:-)

Yes, Tracy, there are undergraduate arts administration programs: there is one here at the university campus I attend.

Check out the University of Toronto at Scarborough's Web page, at http://www.scar.utoronto.ca, click on Search, and search for Arts Administration.
