 Buffet E11 in Eb?
Author: bp (F)

Do you know that horn?

Because the price seems very attractive (maybe the cheapest of the market?), I have some doubts and don't know if it is reliable enough to be played, not professionnaly but quite seriously.

I must tell that, if it is good as a E11 in Bb, that horn should be good enough for a Eb using, in clarinet choir for example.

Thank you to tell me your opinion.

I have heard that the Buffet E-11 C clarinet is somewhat popular. That is some evidence that the Eb would be acceptable.

I've just bought an E11-C clarinet for US D 950. I think is the best quality-price option for a C clarinets. There is a Leblanc Esprit (or Spirit, I'm not sure for similar price). Is a very nice horn, good sound (I play with my B45 Bb Vandoren mp and Vandoren or Glotin 3 reeds), good intonation, good keywork. I don't know the E11-Eb, but if it is made with the same care as the C, it may be good.

My daughter plays an E11 Bb and I play an E11 C, and both are great instruments that could be used in any professional setting. I would assume, therefore, that the E11 Eb is no worse than any other effer, and very well might be just as good "for the money". At least, you should audition a few and let us know what you find.

My friend has an E11 A, and it seems our private teacher likes it just as much as his own R13 A. E11s seem to be great deals and good horns. The only difference most people can tell is that the keywork doesn't seem to move as fluidly as the R13s and higher ranges, which I am sure can be tweaked.

I purchased an "eefer" Buffet E11 about three years ago from IMS for use in an adult concert/symphonic band and a clarinet quartet. I played the horn for about 18 months, after which I sold it to finance my purchase of an alto saxophone. My decision to sell was in no way a reflection of the quality of the horn.

When I had the instrument I had it checked over by my clarinet teacher, Charlie Ellis-MacLeod, retired principal of San Diego Sumphony, graduate of Eastman, etc. Charlie felt (as did I), that the E11 was wonderfully made, very accurate as to intonation, and was an incredable value relative to the cost of other wood eefers. Certainly you could spend much more, perhaps for a Buffet R13, but the E11 was something in the range of 95~98% of what a good R13 could deliver sonically. Unless you just have to have the best or are playing in the VPO, I would heartedly recommend the E11 eefer .

BTW, Charlie told me that he had, when an eefer was called for, often used a Bundy resonite eefer. Clearly technique, the ability to listen, and a good "setup" were much more critical than the instrument.

That said, I did find the stock Buffet mouthpiece provided did not work well for me; I ended up playing on a VanDoren mp that I purchased off of eBay.

To my experience the Buffet E11 is by far the best value for an Eb clarinet. It's professionally made in every respect. The main difference to a full pro model is that the keys are not silverplated.

Sorry, in the specifications it says that E11 do have silverplated keys. Than I really don't know how it differs from a pro level instrument. It's a dern good horn.
