 Jazz/Pop for Clairnet
Author: michael

I have seen lots of classical references here, but I prefer listening to popular jazz. If we didn't have indestructible CD's, I would have already worn out my Eddie Daniels LP's.
I found a 1999 release by Buddy De Franco which is nice. Are there any other contemporary clarinetists out there recording pop or jazz music?

I too would be interested in seeing the names of contemporary jazz/pop clarinetists, especially if they have music available on CDs.

One alternative that I've seen for good (and legal) copies of jazz/pop is to peruse a used book store or by asking the store's manager if I leaf through a music store's back shelf stock. Lots of good stuff is out there, from Big Band to classical, and almost everything else in between if you take the time to look for it. That's one of the few times I actually have fun shopping and my wife doesn't.

Don't worry about minor errors in spelling or grammar here. The Webmaster is like a student clarinet in this respect - very forgiving. Plus, it seems that the more expert the clarinetist, the worse his or her writing seems to be. Even well meaning novice folks like myself don't get all of the terms right the first time, but somehow the message gets communicated anyway. I still find it amazing that a seemingly innocent question from a novice sometimes requires an extremely sophisticated answer from the pros. This kind of interaction is almost priceless.

In any large CDs for sale site, look up Jimmy Giuffre. He is much in the modern jazz idiom and he wrote much of his later music. Bob Wilbur is another jazzer. Eric Dolphy played the bass clar, but I find his stuff too advanced for me. To place a nice word on it.

Cheers

Kenny Davern is said to be in the tradition of Benny Goodman. Anyway, I like his stuff. I also like Ken Peplowski. Though not a jazz clarinettist, Giora Feidman has made beautiful recordings of klezmer tunes, tangos, Gershwin, and old "American songbook" standards.

Thanks for the names of some clarinet artists. I did buy OUT TO LUNCH by Eric Dolphy; I'm going to have to work at listening to that one. I think it is too advanced for me too right now. Michael

A few months ago I saw Al Jareau in concert--he was great. His opening acts were Dave Koz (sax) and Chris Botti (trumpet.) I couldn't help but wish there was a front man clarinetist up there doing the same thing.

Thanks for asking this question Michael I asked almost the same thing on Talkways clarinet BBoard. with no replies .
Down here in New Zealand unless you are in the cities there is little info about anything to do with clarinets or the players, only heard of Eddie Daniels the other day so don't
no what he sounds like .
This BBoard is great for questions that would take weeks to get answered down my way .
But not alot on jazz it seems
I like trad. jazz and have a lot of the English bands and
about 20 PETE FOUNTAIN lps. and cds.
So trying to get these new names will be interesting.

The BBoard is what its members make of it. It doesn't slant towards any particular style except as the members discuss. Jazz/avant garde/contemporary/classical/romantic - what have you - is welcome.

Hi Mike, I'm in Houston, Tx. I bought Eddie Daniels LP
BREAKTHROUGH when it was released in 1985. I had never heard of Mr. Daniels, but was intrigued with the cover art that showed a clarinet. I'm sure I listened to it,but I wasn't playing myself then and I put the album away. When I started playing again this year I remembered Mr. Daniels work and started looking for other releases. Eddie Daniels is truly amazing. I can't imagine anyone playing the clarinet any better than he does. His technique is flawless and his tone beautiful. His releases are fun and I would recommend them highly. Yesterday I was browsing through the jazzhouston.com site and found that a former Houstonian, Shelly Berg (piano) has a new album and Eddie Daniels plays on three songs. I'll be picking that up soon. Nice talking to you.

If you can find old Buddy deFranco, Peanuts Hucko, Pete Fountain, and Artie Shaw LPs/CDs - by all means listen to them. Some literally amazing moments! They vary their licks a lot more than Eddie, too.

Thanks Mark, I do need to listen to a few more people. I have one Buddy deFranco CD which I like. I have one Artie Shaw CD which is more a compilation of his work. I have a tendency to like the sound of newer recorded material. The technology is just a lot better now for recording than it use to be. ( Just a prejudice I should try to push past.)
I've never heard of Peanuts Hucko; I'll have to look around for these.
Does anyone know who the guy was on the old Lawrence Welk show who played clarinet? When I was a kid I thought he was great. I guess it is probably on reruns somewhere, but I have very little time for tv. If anyone remembers him, did he go on to bigger and better solo recordings or anything? Thanks Michael

Well I can relate to your situation, Mike. Here in South East Texas here, the only culture most of these folks have here is whats growin' in their undies. Sorry to have to put it that way, but it the sad truth. If it isn't a fiddle or guitar, they don't even WANT to know about it.

The excellent clarinetist on the Welk's show is Henry Cuesta. He was indeed an excellent player well suited to dance music. He has a few LPs.
